Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has blasted Arsenal star Mesut Ozil’s performance against Olympiakos on Tuesday, according to reports from the Express.
The Gunners suffered their second shock Champions League loss with the Greek side prevailing 3-2 at the Emirates following their 2-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the opening fixture.
The London side will need to get a least one positive result in their next two games against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich or face elimination from the competition.
During the clash against Olympiakos, Arsenal went behind in the 32nd minute when a shot from Felipe Pardo was deflected into the goal by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but Redknapp believes Ozil, who cost the club £42million, could have done so much better to block the shot in the first place.
“Watch Mesut Ozil coming out to try to get a block on the first goal,” he said. “It was pathetic.
“The ball comes out to the edge of the box and he makes the most half-hearted effort to close it down.
“If someone is going to shoot from the edge of the box, you want your midfielders or defenders to throw themselves at it to do everything for the team, whether you cost £4million or £42million.”
The Gunners will now need to focus their attentions on their massive clash against Manchester United this weekend, as a win will push them level on points with the current league leaders.
