The biggest betting heat of the year is here once again. There really is no thrill like backing the winner of the Grand National.

It’s the only horse race in the sporting calendar that everyone wants to have a crack at. Whether you’re a form studier or merely a pin sticker, the Grand National provides a chance for everyone to become a betting genius.

Everyone wants to catch the race and in this day and age of instant live streaming, it’s now harder for punters to miss the race than it is to watch it.

The Grand National is a spectacular sporting occasion that is firmly fixed in the calendar for all sports fans. It is tradition to have a punt on the outcome and everyone has their own National story – however bad or good – that is etched in their memory.

For the bookmakers this is the race that will make or break their year.

If, like in recent years, an unfancied horse around the 33/1 mark wins then the big wig bookmaker executives will be booking flights to the Bahamas.

However, if a gamble is landed and one of the favourites does the business then it would cause further damage to their profits sheets that are already looking disastrous following punter friendly results at the Cheltenham Festival. The horse that could put some bookmakers out of business this year is ante post hot pot and defending champion Many Clouds, who is bidding to become the first horse since Red Rum to successfully defend a National crown.

Jockey Leighton Aspall is also bidding to become the first jockey in history to win three Grand Nationals on the spin.

David Williams, Ladbrokes head of media relations reports: “A repeat win for Many Clouds on Saturday is Ladbrokes’ nightmare result after the recent pain of the Cheltenham Festival. Last year Many Clouds was a great result for the bookies – what a difference a year makes.”

Many Clouds has a fantastic chance but it’s not often the bookmakers suffer continuous damage, so despite his claims it might be worth chancing something at a bigger price.

One thing to remember when placing your National bets is to take the price at the time when you place the bet otherwise bookmakers will pay out at starting price if you’re a winner. Bookmakers cut the prices of all horses just before the off and regularly get away with it.

They take advantage of inexperienced punters.

Don’t get taken for a ride, take the price.

So, which horse should you be taking the price on this year?

Our advice would be to split your stakes on O’Faolains Boy at 25/1 and Morning Assembly at 33/1.

Both horses have the class edge needed for a race of this test and both are brilliant jumpers.

They’re high enough in the weights but I’d be surprised if at least one of them isn’t in with a chance jumping the third last fence.

From there who knows what will happen.

They may lack the X-Factor but it’s much better to back horses who are guaranteed to get round.

Good luck all.
