Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will veto Ryan Giggs staying as his assistant because he fears that he will emerge as a managerial rival.

The Portuguese tactician was appointed manager of the club last month, and will have taken early steps to get things in order ahead of his first campaign in charge.

While that will involve activity in the summer transfer market, it will also mean sorting out his backroom staff, with many of his trusted assistants joining him at Old Trafford.

According to The Times, Giggs is not likely to feature in his plans moving forward, with Mourinho concerned over the Welshman becoming more of a rival if things go wrong.

It is claimed that Giggs ‘distanced himself’ from Louis van Gaal and David Moyes at crucial times during their respective tenures in Manchester, while Mourinho is also said to be wary of his close relationship with Paul Scholes, who was particularly scathing of United last season.

Furthermore, it’s added that Mourinho expects unwavering loyalty from his staff, and with doubts over whether Giggs would offer that, it doesn’t appear as though the 42-year-old will be staying on as an assistant for next season.

While it will certainly come as a disappointment for many United fans that Giggs could be on his way out, it could in fact work out well for the club legend as it may be the push that he needs to go out and gain real managerial experience elsewhere.

It’s no secret that the United hierarchy wish to see him become manager at some point in the future, and by leaving Old Trafford, possibly securing a top job elsewhere, he will be in a better position to return and enjoy a successful reign with experience in dealing with what comes with the job.
