Predicted Manchester United XI vs Tottenham: Van Gaal to stick by young stars in crucial clash

Manchester United face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday evening hoping to keep their charge for Champions League qualification on course.

Louis van Gaal’s men are unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions, winning their last two Premier League games by a single goal to keep the pressure on Manchester City and West Ham United.

Although the likes of Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are all on the road towards recovery from their respective injury woes, Van Gaal will likely stick with mostly the same line-up as last time out although there are a few question marks in defence.

David De Gea is a certainty to start, with Daley Blind and Chris Smalling forming the heart of the United defence with Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia likely to be on the left and right flank respectively.

The visitors will likely be keen to provide their defence with plenty of coverage given the threat that their rivals pose going forward, thus suggesting that Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin will line up in midfield.

Further afield, Anthony Martial will be expected to start out wide on the left, with Jesse Lingard on the opposite flank and Juan Mata playing through the middle.

Teenage sensation Marcus Rashford will likely continue to lead the line, with the 18-year-old hoping to build on his three goals and one assist in five Premier League outings thus far.

While Tottenham have their own ambitions this season of keeping the pressure on league leaders Leicester City with a win, Mauricio Pochettino’s men will find it difficult against an in-form United side who seem to be growing in confidence at a perfect time.

Nevertheless, as has been the case on multiple occasions this year, Van Gaal’s side have slipped up in big games and they will be desperate to avoid another.
