Craig Bellamy had been guest-host of Monday Night Football for a matter of seconds before Jamie Carragher destroyed Gary Neville’s replacement with a well-placed quip.

While anchor man Ed Chamberlain welcomed Bellamy onto the show with a warm word and a friendly gesture, banter-king Carragher couldn’t help himself with well-placed put-down aimed right at his former teammate.

“The only man we could find,” giggled Carra, barely able to contain himself, “who’s more unpopular than Gary Neville!”

Indeed, during his playing career, Bellamy was involved in various controversial incidents—notably in 2006 when he was cleared of assaulting two women [BBC].

The former Wales international has stepped in as a guest-host for the show following the departure of Neville last week.

The Manchester United legend initially joined Sky Sports in 2011, before becoming the face of Monday Night Football alongside Carragher in 2014.

The chemistry between Neville and Carra made MNF one of the ‘must-watch’ programmes of Sky Sports’ football programming, but their double act was ended this week when Neville was appointed as Valencia coach.

While Bellamy is the first replacement for Neville, Sky have confirmed that he will not be the new manager’s permanent substitute, and that ex-Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will step into the breach when the Blues face league leaders Leicester City next Monday night.
