Everton manager Roberto Martinez says his side never really recovered from going a goal down after 18 minutes of their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at Goodison Park.

The Toffees were punished by goals from Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and old boy Wayne Rooney – on the day that former player and manager Howard Kendall died at the age of 69.

A minute’s applause was observed before kick-off and both teams wore black armbands as a tribute to the Toffees’ 1984 FA Cup winning manager.
